Turret naming conventions

Post by Nerd42 » Mon Dec 21, 2009 11:54 am

It's confusing when both the manned and unmanned turrets are all called just "turrets." I think you should rename "Laser Turret" to be "Unmanned Laser Turret" or somesuch to remove this confusion. (same for all the other unmanned turrets)

Manual vs. automatic would be a better naming convention.

The other thing that's ambiguous about turrets is their sensing. There's nothing in-game that would indicate whether a particular turret can detect for example a cloaked necromancer. And in the case of a ghost pack, whether or not the turret can actually harm what they're shooting at. (Course, ghost packs are a bad idea to begin with, but that's another matter.)

Incorrect. All turrets that look like indoor turrets detect motion.

All turrets that shoot explosive projectiles will hurt ghosts if the projectile explodes close enough to the ghost by colliding with something else, like a wall behind the ghost or the floor beneath the ghost.

How do you use this knowledge?

Shock Turret + Flame Turret combo will catch those sneaky bastards every time. Though to ensure they don't even get in your base in the first place, you should burry barriers like force fields in all of the walls.

I agree. And thanks for the tip about shock turrets! I hope somebody will fix this issue.

There aren't enough manual turrets to make it worthwhile cluttering up the inventory display. Maybe in the information about the turret you could say whether or not it's automatic/manual, but I wouldn't rename all the turrets to "Automatic Laser Turret" "Automatic Flame Turret" "Automatic Neuroblaster" "Manual Particle Beam Turret."

Fix what issue, the naming, or how shock turrets work?

Information is bottom printed when you purchase a manual turret.

Code: Select all

Bottomprint(%client, "<jc>Irradiation Cannon:<f2> has no auto-sensor and must be controlled manually to fire.");
Bottomprint(%client, "<jc>Mortar Turret:<f2> has no auto-sensor and must be controlled manually to fire.");
Bottomprint(%client, "<jc>Particle Beam Turret:<f2> has no auto-sensor and must be controlled manually to fire.");

The naming, and you need those bits of information in order to know which ones to purchase, not after you purchase. I haven't seen those in my inventory window. Course I wasn't running Presto Pack until recently.

it changes stuff about how different things are displayed, the inventory window in particular with the mini camera view and whatnot

You don't need presto to get that window, plas's 11fav's does the same thing.

But that still has nothing to do with the topic at hand...

Regardless, it would still be better to have an unambiguous naming convention.

I suppose they could be grouped by fire type...

Aren't there enough categories as there is?

You've got miscellaneous deployables, deployable sensors, deployable turrets, deployable bases, deployable station, etc...
