I bought the Orange Box for Portal and ETQW because there is a Tribes project based on it.

bawb, I think that's the funniest thing I've ever read.

I also purchased the Orange Box, because I wanted Portal, and everyone told me I needed to get a Steam game. I actually got a couple other valve games too, but they all suck. Good graphics though.

My favorite games are Tribes, BF2, NFS: Most Wanted (haven't tried carbon), in that order.
Microsoft's Chess Titans is better than all the games I have in Steam.

The feature I'm excited about for playtribes.com is that the phrase "client side" will be obsolete, since you'll practically be downloading the whole game modded or not each time you visit. The other stuff that Andrew mentioned sounds good too.

I remember reading a post from Plasmatic years ago, when he tested an old Glide capable graphics card with tribes and said it was as good if not better than OpenGL. When you say Software mode is gone, only OpenGL remains... That mean's glide is gone too, right?

Thats what im getting at, Tribes has the gameplay down without a dout but new people won't be drawn in by that alone they need eye candy.
If the new version had both the great gameplay and better graphics it would ignite the tribes series again.

The changes sound pretty sweet so far, the unlimited datablocks will help me finish my mod which i guess will be released so time after 1.40 is out and i make the needed changes for compatibility.

I do have a question if .vol is removed what format are skins and mods going to use? Or will skins/mods have to be ran through directories?

It's .zip: http://forum.instantaction.com/smf/inde ... pic=9257.0
Having the contents of the resource volumes in /base (or large mods) be extracted there would be painful to work with, even if broken into some directories, as it's thousands of files.

Andrew wrote:a lot of scripting language enhancements, all the scripts have been refactored/re-written, the datablock limit IS raised to virtually unlimited, [...]
I don't suppose we could get some real details on these any time soon? Alternatively, will documentation be made and available around the time of release?

yes, as long as the graphics improvements dont suffer the gameplay i'm all for it.

Please i beg of the dev's to not change anything in the movement to make it be more real or whatever reason. The way you move around in tribes is perfect.

and andrew, that sounds pretty cool. can't wait :)

Satan packs an OS... Angels use Heaven's Fury... That means disks are the weapon of men.

well yea, if they support png, you can change the textures cant you :P . You just need to be skilled at making/picking/ripping w/e good textures

Maybe he was talking about download-able content? Which would be really nice!

Game needs corona effects. Placeable corona effects which face the screen.
Real particles too, rather than just slapping 3d models with translucent textures behind rockets.

Fehh, screw it -- Perhaps I should just switch over to some other game that actually has bumpmap/normalmap support, like Sauerbraten :P
--Since none of my mods involve jetting, that is. :)

a proper particle engine that can be fully configured in a datablock (like torque). That could make for really nice effects

Yep.
Be much, MUCH less laggy than the way I have to do it right now -- Bulletdatas being spawned at position/rotation by the server :(

Perhaps image base, size and color modification options for particles?

Yeah, both Software mode and Glide are completely gone, no traces left. I don't have a glide card so I really couldn't take a look at if the glide code to steal any improvements it made. The terrain bug behind the BE SH base is fixed with OpenGL now at least, and the textures are properly mip'd / tri-linear so the terrain doesn't look like it's crawling with ants by default.

The scripting stuff will probably need to be documented I guess. If I had to guess, I'd say there'd be a dev section on playtribes it'd be on. Some of the stuff that's been added:

ternary compares:
Code: Select all
%var = %bool ? "this" : "that";

switch statements:
Code: Select all
switch ( %name ) {
   case "Jim":
   case "Joe": return "Male";
   case "Sally": return "Female";
   default: return "Amoeba";
}

variable/function dereferencing (kind of like pointers):
Code: Select all
%testvar = "$abc";
*%testvar = "$def"; // $abc now holds the value "$def";
$def = "ghi";
%testfun = "echo";
*%testfun( *$abc ); // echos "ghi";

function attachments (nofix's idea):
Code: Select all
function test( %a, %b, %c ) {
   echof( "Test: %1 %2 %3", %a, %b, %c );
}

function pretest( %a, %b, %c ) before test {
   %a = "before";
   echo( "BEFORE test!" );
}

function posttest( %a, %b, %c ) after test {
   echo( "AFTER test!" );
}

Running "test( 1, 2, 3 );" results in
Code: Select all
BEFORE test!
Test: before 2 3
AFTER test!

As well as a lot of functions that used to be done in script (string, math, etc) that are now built in to the engine so they're more efficient.

Movement is staying exactly the same.

NR's aren't.. fixed per-se, but you can disable client-side collisions which effectively removes them.
