Summertime is rapidly approaching. Historically this time of year has provided an uptick in the Tribes playerbase. You're probably not authorized to release any info at this point but I'll use this thread to throw some thoughts out there regarding client and server stuff.
Client: If I have to go back to .png I'll shoot someone. Or cry. Or something. If vhuds aren't supported I'll choose amongst the former choices as well. New sound support like oog would be nice.
Server: Not a huge deal hopefully. I'll assume any code changes are for the best. Engine changes dealing with memory management and datablock limits will be most welcome. I'd cry if I lost my MySQL support though.
I'm hoping that all the hard work you've put into in for the past (insert big number here) years will make it into 1.40.
p.s. I hope you're getting paid big money. If not pm me and I'll ship you a case of Ramen.

png is a pretty common format in games and 3d engines, it's lossless and supports transparency. ogg is nice.

Let me rain all over this.
PNG..TGA... who gives a doggy doo.
WAV..OOG... who gives a doggy doo.
HM "Proof"... who gives a doggy doo.
File formats are the least of the titles worries, Stopping HM.. heh yeah till someone makes another version.
Am i really to belive that new formats and a little block for HM is getting you guys all wet?
Yeah we wanted this update 9 years ago, but we didn't get it then and we lost all support then the master was canned.
Unless some significant changes are made what are they really giving to us?
Lets see some updated graphics and coding structure/flexibility some improved netcode and irc improvements?
Otherwise they are taking 1.11 blowing the dust off it adding LH and calling it new.*
*If you respond negitivly to my negitive post you confirm the fact that you'r an aids infested twat with no sence of right and wrong.

why would you want irc improvements. Imo it's completely useless and can be removed. There's plenty of proper irc clients out there.. no need to run irc from tribes

Armageddon, You use notepad.exe for scripting, why not use telnet.exe for irc?

lol, the IRC comment was just a example. Im more worried about real changes to the game not file formats and i was hoping not to be alone on that but i guess i am... again.
I use to use telnet for IM'in before icq and aol came out, it was sweet but not very effective in terms of usage for conversations.
But back too it, wouldn't you guys want to see updated graphics and a more efficient netcode along with the things they say are going to be in it?

for modability, more common file formats or better convertors would be a great asset to the game.

Modding aside is what im getting at as most players and new players to the game won't give a crap about wav vs. oog. They are going to play the game and go.. "Holy doggy doo im nearly a square". Im sure that will send them into a frenzy to play some more. Who needs graphic intense gaming, hell i bought this ATi 4870 just to look at and render graphics from 97.

If you want Tribes with better graphics, there's always T:V but I suspect Tribes didn't last ten years because of it's graphics.

Fact is, new players will judge the game by it's appearance. Old players don't give a doggy doo because they love the gameplay, but new players will see a game from 1998, and forget about even trying it. Not to mention it's probably the most difficult FPS to learn, so just trying to play it will make them scared.
Then again, I guess we'll see.

i dont know.. i'm personally getting a little tired of all those new games that look awesome but play like crap or are just plain boring. Atleast those good ol' uglier games are fun (well most of 'm

)

WELL.
.png is the "official" format because of the idiotic bitmap flags in the pbmps. There wasn't a way to embed translucent/additive/etc flags inside .tga, so we had to go .png. No .tga support in now, but it will get in eventually.
No .ogg or plugin support yet since it's not high on the radar, but I plan to get them in when we have the other stuff up polished up.
Right now it's still lots of bug fixes and stuff (so many buffer overflows..), and internal changes. vol and bmp are completely removed, software mode is completely removed (pure opengl now, you can play in a window!), a lot of scripting language enhancements, all the scripts have been refactored/re-written, the datablock limit IS raised to virtually unlimited, and the awful IRC client was ripped out entirely.
I need to try getting justin to find the dts exporter source code (if it exists) so that can be updated.

Yeah, I agree. Unfortunately the masses don't. Hell, the last game I bought and played ( 2 times max ) was TF2 about a year or two ago!

unlimited datablocks made me hard. tribes is the only game i play besides the occasional fallout massacre or oblivion killing spree because it gets me hard. but even those new games dont get me hard like tribes does, i get hard about 100% of the time playing tribes, tribes is like a 10 year old reusable viagra that still gets me hard. girls see my playing tribes and they tie their hair back because they know whats coming, me, and im hard
