Indeed, btw
LZH isn't really that much of a hard thing, its a well documented compression algorithm.

Actually after looking trough it fast its quite a bit like this:

HEADER SO NUL FIRSTFILEMARKER SI ' NUL FIRSTLINEOFFILE
RESTOFFILE
LASTLINEOFFILE NUL FILEMARKER NUL FIRSTLINEOFFILE
RESTOFFILE
LASTLINEOFFILE NUL FILEMARKER NUL FIRSTLINEOFFILE
RESTOFFILE
LASTLINEOFFILE NUL FILEMARKER NUL FIRSTLINEOFFILE
RESTOFFILE
LASTLINEOFFILE NUL volsY EOT NUL firstfilename NUL secondfilename NUL

And goes on for a while like that...
Indeed its quite clear

The files are stored at the begining and the file list is stored as last.
I haven't figured out yet what the last bunch of lines mean... :|

Wow in 5 minutes :P

LZH is patented, isn't it?

last time i opened a vol in notepad, start of file and end of files were special characters that i couldn't read...

i'll try again, and if that doesn't work, i'll add a text area to my compiler/decompiler and display the contents of a vol in it for testing.

but that won't help me with bmp  pbmp and vise versa

doh! you dont open that with notepad.. you open it with a hex editor so you can actually see what characters it are (in hex)

Isn't it just a whole bunch of math formula's that form the compression algorithm. Cause if i don't mistake LZH is a little bit lossy, not much tough.

i see a bunch of open source lzh compression/decompression programs, but they have so many features, it would take me awhile to find the part that i'm interested in. maybe when i have more time on my hands i'll take another look at it.

maybe i'll be able to find an open source bmp > pbmp and vise versa too.

Compression algorithms can be copyrighted or whatever.

i'm not sure. Wouldnt that be a software patent? I know for example you cant put a patent on a protocol that sits on top of TCP or UDP.

i think LZH/LHA was copyright by it's creator. but that doesn't stop people from writing programs that use his compression methods.

many of them are open source even.

even if you have to give him a share of your profits, if you make it for free, whats the problem?

Yeah, it's definitely a good prog for the beginning modder, who doesn't care to deal with batch files and all that mumbo-jumbo. I've used it for years. Another good one was the Tribes++ Suite Tools or whatever it was called. Not quite as user-friendly, but you could extract lzh compressed vols with it, unlike with pakscape.
