Greetings server owner of the following servers:

$ ./queryinfo2 66.188.56.68:28009
Server name: Annihilation Public DOX & OC3 http://www.TribesXtreme.com
$ ./queryinfo2 66.188.56.68:28777
Server name: T R I B E S <!> S T I L L KICKIN
$ ./queryinfo2 66.188.56.68:29096
Server name: Annihilation Pushbiscuit

your router firewall is too restrictive for anyone to see your servers.

you currently are blocking any UDP packets to those servers unless they arrive from port 28000.

this allows the master servers to believe that the three servers are available because the masters are querying
from port 28000.

when a gamer tries to connect or get server info the arriving UDP packets can be from any port. since you
are not allowing that nobody can see or play on your servers.

you should alter your router firewall to permit all incoming udp ports, not just 28000.

FYI!

Surely they'd notice that their servers are always empty? :P

I'm starting to think this is a larger issue involving the recent windows firewall handling because it turns out there are 4 other servers around the world that are the same way.

When you run tribes for the first time on a windows machine you may get a pop-up asking you if you want to unblock tribes or not (from the firewall's perspective). When tribes first starts up it will do DNS lookups for the master servers but since Microsoft has learned not to block DNS anymore the first packet of interest to the firewall is the "hello" to the first master server on port 28000.

Windows senses this first time activity and gives you the pop-up to ask if you want it unblocked. In days gone by windows would unblock tribes completely, i.e., all ports were allowed.

Lately it seems that Microsoft has tightened this up in recent windows. If you say yes to unblock tribes it will only unblock it to port 28000. It doesn't, for example, also unblock 28001 anymore. It doesn't sense new activity on other ports and also ask about those. Its only the first port the program uses the first time.

The solution is to manually modify your windows firewall to open all the ports your game server will use IF you are running it on more recent windows.

Yes, in windows 7 if you disable the firewall some types of udp messages will still get blocked; i've seen this at my old job. The way around it is to just disable the service.

If anybody of the old anni community needs a box for a server, let me know. I got some space left on my virtual box, especially for a simple win7 machine. I'm not maintaining it though, you'll get remote desktop and/or vnc instead. Note: I will only hand this out to the anni community people I know from here... not just random people.
